I started watching Memphis wrestling approx. 1974 at the age of 5. It had a profound affect on my childhood as the memories are worth a million bucks.
From time to time I want to chronicle the years I watched. I hope this brings back some memories for others as well. My memories are assisted by various sources of reading.
So.............. 1974
-Tojo turned on tag partner Jarrett in Feb. with Fargo taking on Tojo to avenge the turn for Jarrett while he was out w/ an "injury". Jarrett returns a few months later to feud w/ Tojo. They reunited when Tojo makes the save for Jarrett just a few months later from Bobby Mayne & Charles Fulton.
-The great Lou Thesz made some appearances holding the Southern Jr. Title for a time in the spring.
-Note that in Feb. Ali Viziri debuted in the area & would become famous as Iron Sheik.
Bobby Mayne competed in the area but would find more fame as "Cowboy" Bobby Jaggers years later.
Chris Gallegher debuted in the area. He would gain a ton of fame later as "Dirty" Dutch Mantell.
-Fargo feuded w/ Lawler early in the year for the title of "King of Memphis". Lawler put Fargo on the shelf for about a month w/ an injury. Fargo, while recovering, refereed some matches between Lawler & Ricky Gibson in thier feud over the U.S. Jr. Title.
- Besides Fargo & Gibson, Lawler feuded w/ BoBo Brazil, Tojo, Dick the Bruiser, Robert Fuller, Duke Myers, Al Greene, Hickerson, Sam Bass, & Tommy Gilbert.
-Sheik, Detroit U.S. Champ, came in for a short feud w/ Fargo. Also appearing for Gulas was Andre the Giant. Harley Race worked a few dates in Sept.
-Lawler got a shot at NWA Title in Sept. against Jack Brisco.
-Lawler turned face in Oct. after being attacked by Sam Bass, Phil Hickerson, & Al Greene.
-First World Six Man Tag Team Champions were crowned in a tournament when Jackie Fargo, Dennis Hall, & George Gulas defeated Juan Sebastion, Don Kent, & Lawler.
-Lawler teamed w/ Tojo to win Southern Tag Titles in Nov. from Greene & Hickerson.
-Roy Welch, aka Ron Fuller, bought the Knoxville territory.
